Dont say that too often pal...I hear the fishing god knows all kinds of language
The not so fun part of targetting whitefish is.....on slow days, you may need to spend hrs to locate the school of fish, and then just a few minutes to limit out...not that there's anything wrong, at least by law, with practising catch and release before you decide to keep your second fish and call it a day...ice fishing adds more fun...short rod, art of fish landing through the hole with thick ice etc....but open water fishing still has the edge though, changing location is no more a big deal...trolling for lake trout increases the chance of running into fish too...
Mind sharing your tactic of trolling? ....Down rigging, dipsey diver, leadcore, snap weight....dont think flat lining will produce this time of season
I used down rigger started trolling at 50 feet in 60 fow, for about 30 minutes for nothing, until we reached 80 fow. then we changed to jigging. We jigged for 1 hour before we got the first hit. I actually did not have much confidence on down rigger, never worked for me. fishing for whitefish is just like what you have said. When you find the school, you have one fish after another. But to locate the school is not that easy. I was very lucky in my recent fishing trips, the begginner's luck I should say.
....as you may be aware of, lakers have moved to deeper waters recently since the temperature stabilised somewhat at a higher level...and most are hugging to the bottom third of the water column....fish are so light bite that only low % of hookup would have triggered the light-set release...rod tip provides more direct signal when it dances...one trick we often use is to switch on the clicker of the level-wind, set the drag lowest possible so that a little additional drag in the line will trigger the clicker to tell you a light bite fish is on...of course this does not work for d'rigging.....fish hard!

I have never got a single fish with my down rigger
