In Search of Whities

Since the ice wasn't quite ready for the opener on Simcoe, my GF and I headed up to Lake Temagami Shores Resort for the opener. Our journey started at around noon on New Year's Eve and it took us about 4.5 hours to drive up and the roads were dry and very safe for driving. When we arrived the temperature was -26 degrees, it was so cold we didn't even bother with the night bite for walleyes. We could hear the crunch in the snow as we walked to our room. The next morning we headed out for first light at around 7:15 a.m., even then it was still dark. We walked out on 3 to 4 inches of snow and about 100-200 yards from shore and there was about 12" of ice. Lucky for us it did not take long to find the fish. We drilled our first hole and marked fish immediately. Our Vex was constantly marking fish throughout the whole day, non stop. No wonder the limit is 25. By far, this is one of the most productive lake I've iced fish on. Here are a couple of pics of our quest for Whities out at Lake Temagami.

Dont see any pic...

There are loads of Herrings in Lady Simcoe these days...their population has been building up rapidly in the past three years as I counted the nos I ran into both in hard & soft water..

Lots 18 inchers of those hooked last time (3jan) I was out...never fished outside Simcoe for them Whities, dont know how does that size range compare with the Whities from Temagami...

I hear there was no limit on Herring before 1995...and 6/day since then unitil a total shut off by 2001... hopefully they will be reopened again soon... I hear they are tastey too

Thanks for the report!

Thanks for your hospitality (your bro. too)

Fishcrazy is always helpful and look after everybody on ice. He seldom gets the chance to fish himself. And yet he still catches the most. I don't understand. http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q253/bass1668/DSC01241.jpg

Learn many useful tips from you too. Thanks.
