YORK REGIONAL POLICE INVITES YOU TO SAFE SHORES FISHING DAY

York Regional Police and its community partners invite the public and the media to the first Safe Shores Fishing and Information Day being held on Sunday, June 8, 2008, in the Town of Georgina.

The event will be held between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., at De La Salle Park, located at 1940 Metro Road in Jackson’s Point.  Admission is free and this is a great opportunity to spend time with your family and neighbours learning about fishing and tourism in the area.

York Regional Police, along with the Ontario Provincial Police, the Town of Georgina and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources have come together to host this family event.  Displays will be set up around the park with information from the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters, the Ontario Chinese Anglers Federation, the Ministry of Natural Resources, the York Regional Police Community Services Bureau, Crime Stoppers of York Region and the Ontario Provincial Police.  The Town of Georgina will also have area tourism information available.

At 12 p.m., Chief Armand La Barge will welcome guests.  Other speakers include Superintendent Wes Bonner, #3 District and Regional Councillor Danny Wheeler, Chairman, Regional Municipality of York Police Services Board.  Members from the Ontario Provincial Police and the Ministry of Natural Resources will also deliver brief remarks and will be available to answer any questions.

At approximately 12:45 p.m., local fishing pro Wil Wegman will present his Fishing Lake Simcoe show.  It includes many tips on fishing and could prove beneficial to the budding angler.

You can try your new-found fishing skills off the public beach or just enjoy the day at the park with refreshments.  The York Regional Police Mascots will also be on hand to provide some fun for the kids.

“Lake Simcoe is one of Ontario’s greatest natural resources and is often referred to as the ‘Other Great Lake,’” said Chief La Barge.  “All Ontarians should not only feel safe when fishing on Lake Simcoe but they should also feel welcome. We are proud to partner with the Town of Georgina and a host of other community groups in this initiative.”

For more information contact the York Regional Police Diversity and Cultural Resources Bureau at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 6089 or 7986.

YORK REGIONAL POLICE INVITES YOU TO SAFE SHORES FISHING DAY

I think the Asian anglers should support this event and show the people of Georgina that we are anglers and we do our best to obey the fishing regulations and we are not just phantom anglers. Hats off to the Town of Georgina to get this event started. I encourage people to attend this event.

YORK REGIONAL POLICE INVITES YOU TO SAFE SHORES FISHING DAY

Just heard from the Ministry of Natural Resources and was told that the $30.00 parking fee normally charged for Da La Salle Park will be waived this Sunday for this event. There is also a public fishing pier at Da La Salle Park where people can bring their kids and do some fishing.

Thanks rhsi

....great info

MANY THANKS~

Just wondering if it would be too much people around........

一山一水一钓翁,笑天笑地笑春风~

My 2 cents

Why do we need a day like this to enjoy our fishing?  This is our water too and we should be able to fish anywhere anytime we want except when the fish are out of season.  It's a good thing that they are having this event but what does it look like?  That we need police escorts to enjoy our fishing and that these hoodlums are putting fear in us Asian Anglers?

I do admit that nip-tipping is becoming a problem.  We just need to change our ways of fishing.  Never go alone go with friends, bring a cell phone, bring camera so you can take pics of car license plate and etc.  When you are on the shore fishing pick up all your garbage, try to respect the place that you're fishing, like not make tooo much noise or give other anglers their space so they can fish.

I'm not saying that members here never pick up their garbage and make too much noise but we all see this problem from time to time.

If I do attend, that is to hear Wil Wegman speak..lol

just my 2 cents

I'm new to the OCAA forum.

I'm new to the OCAA forum. Charlie from Lures & Tours - Lake Simcoe and Lake Couchiching. I was at the Safe Shores event on Sunday. It was pretty low key, mostly with speeches from several people. Wil Wegman did not get a chance to speak because the weather was so good no one wanted to go back inside the building after the coffee break. But no complaints from anyone.

There are pictures from the event in our photo gallery - look for the Photo Gallery link on our main page and then look for Safe Shores Fishing Day photo album.

Thanks to OCAA for their information table, and I got to meet YES magazine and the others who came too. Unfortunately this event did not get the attention of the locals except for people working for the town or other government.

Thanks Charlie for the

Thanks Charlie for the update.
