Finesse fishing for Crappies

Hi everyone, here is something to try this Spring. Ever try downsizing for crappies? Next time you are out fishing and before you give up because you think that the fish are not biting, try downsizing your bait and use the smallest/micro bait you can buy with a 1/32oz jig head. If you don't have any of these small/micro baits in your tackle box then buy some, it's a must.

Micro baits to me is anything that is tiny and much smaller than the 1.5inch traditional tube. It doesn't have to be a tube, it can be anything that is small. you can take the fin-s fish, fin-s shad or a twister tail type of plastic, bite 3/4 of the bait off and just use only the little tail with a 1/32 jighead.

Use it with a float and work it very, very slow. Just work your bait like the way you normally do but only slower and pause longer. If you like to slow retrieve then retrieve even slower and if you like to twitch and pause your bait then just twitch softer and pause longer.

Weather does effect Crappies like any other fish. Right now the ice had just melted and the water is still very cold, it is the best time to try it. Cold water does affect crappies and how do you catch a fish in cold water? You downsize right?

Not only you should downsize when the water is cold but also when the fishing spot get alot of pressure and the fish get spooked.

Give it a try! And please let the Big ones go.

Let the big ones go

Thanks for these great tips fishcrazy.

How big a size you consider big for crappies - 12", 13", 14",15".........?

Jown, I feel certain size

Jown, I feel certain size fish is meant for eating and certain size fish should be release.  Big ones I think is meant for pictures and release, so they can go back to the water and reproduce more big ones.  Plus at that weight they are too old to eat.  just like eating young chicken and old chicken.

To me any fish that's a trophy size is too big to eat.  At the holland river last week we released a 2 pound crappie.  I would show you guys a pic but we didn't have a camera, but it didn't matter we let her go anyways, she is better alive making more baby than dead.

My uncle is old school and he keeps everything he  catches, and that's find.  I fish with him all the time and when  he catches a monster fish he keeps it, but when I catch a monster fish I let her go in front of him.  he thinks I'm crazy for letting her go, he doesn't tell me but he tells his wife....lol
