The waters of the Sand Lake fish sanctuary in Zone 18 are now closed to all fishing from March 1 to the Friday before the 4th Saturday in June.
The Sand Lake sanctuary (also known as Westport Pond), North Crosby Township, includes the waters of that part of Sand Lake lying in Lots 15 and 16 in Concession IX and Lot 15 in Concession VIII, and the waters of the river flowing between Wolfe Lake and Sand Lake.
Extending the closing date until the end of June provides additional protection for spawning bass. The area is extensively used by bass for spawning, during which time they are particularly vulnerable to inadvertent hooking by anglers fishing for other species.
Anglers are being advised of the change through MNR’s website, letters to local stakeholders and through no fishing signs which have already been posted in the area.
