All electric-start outboard motors are equipped w/ a built-in alternator that will recharge the cranking battery, but only when the motor is running beyond 2,000 RPM or so....so if you do a lot of drift fishing, meaning a lot of crankings followed by low RPM cruises to start @ drift, then you might need to top up the cranking battery after that fishing trip...

The installation of an Isolator (or Phase charger) can allow the alternator, while the motor is running, to charge the deep-cycle battery (the one for your trolling motor) as well after the cranking battery has been fully charged....but this way can only add some extra juice to the deep-cycle battery, never a full-charge..

You dont really need to unload the batteries to charge them, if you have the proper multi-band on-board charger installed...they are fully automatic, and will do the periodic topping up on the batteries as long as the AC source is on..

Isolator & On-board Charger are usually add-on's, they dont come with the boat.....but I think most bass boats like yours have the O-B charger installed..

You won't see the built-in alternator/charger as an individual unit inside the motor....they are composed of the Magneto (magnets fixed to the underside of the flywheel and turn w/ it), few stationary Copper Coils underneath the flywheel (Trigger & Ignition coils responsible for sparkings, Charging Coil taking care of the topping up of the cranking battery after @ start up).... and there's the AC/DC convertor & Voltage Regulator...

If your cranking battery is always low, it may be aged and it's time for a replacement.....you can check this out w/ your portable charger, see how full the battery is after charging....if the battery can take up the charge without problem, then the "always low" problem could be within the alternator, and better have a professional to check up the power-pack of the motor..

I noticed that turning the motor on will charge the main/crank battery. I'll figure out if it charges the trolling battery as well. If not, I will add one isolator for it and then I can fully charge them every 2 months or so.

Actually, both batteries are 1 year old and I haven't encountered any problem with them. I wanted them to be fully charged after every trip to keep them healthy so I asked the original question. I learned a lot from here and I'll keep asking questions when I have any. Thanks, shmartangler. You guys are pros.
