n this age of increasing global connectivity, development pressures and climatic change, the short and long-term impact of invasive species to Ontario's biodiversity, society and economy is a pressing issue. Ontario has the largest number of non-native plant species in Canada and is at greater risk of new invasive species becoming established than any other region in Canada. To help address this urgent problem, the Invasive Species Centre, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, Ontario Invasive Plant Council, the Invasive Species Research Institute and Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters are partnering to host the first ever International Terrestrial Invasive Plant Species (TIPS) Conference.

Winter temperatures and frozen waters may be on the way, but that won't stop Atlantic Salmon from making their way to the Fleming College hatchery this week. Through Bring Back the Salmon (BBTS), also known as the Lake Ontario Atlantic Salmon Restoration Program, approximately 75,000 Atlantic Salmon eggs will soon be arriving at the school's educational hatchery.

According to the Environmental Commissioner of Ontario, less than one percent of the province's budget goes to help ministries manage the environment. That fact isn't news to the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH), who have been fighting to increase government contributions to the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) for years. Combined, the MNR and Ministry of Environment (MOE) receive less than a penny per operational dollar, a percentage that has been trending downward for almost twenty years.

The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH) the province's largest fish and wildlife conservation organization, extends its congratulations to Thunder Bay Council for their decision to introduce a bow hunting season within rural sections of the city limits. The move is designed to deal with Thunder Bay's considerable deer concentration issue.

The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH) is proud to host the annual OFAH Get Outdoors Youth Leadership Conference, at the Delta Meadowvale Hotel in Mississauga, in conjunction with the 84th OFAH Annual General Meeting and Fish & Wildlife Conference. Every March Break, 80 youth will get the opportunity to partake in activities that encourage interest in hunting, fishing and other outdoor activities. Registration for the Youth Leadership Conference is now open.

PETERBOROUGH, ON -- In the aftermath of the introduction of Bill C-19, An Act to Amend the Criminal Code and Firearms Act, spokespersons for the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, anti-gun groups and opposition parties are claiming that the abolition of the long gun registry, and all associated data, will rob police of a valuable tool to keep track of guns in Canada, and leave them with 'nothing to check.'

NORTHUMBERLAND - Community members are invited to attend a free workshop delivered over two sessions in early November, presented by the Community Stream Steward Program (CSSP). Workshop participants will learn the basics of stream conservation, including stream ecology, water flow, wetlands, monitoring, and restoration techniques.

The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH) is pleased that the new provincial cabinet will include a northern Ontario-based Minister of Natural Resources. Michael Gravelle, representing Thunder Bay-Superior North, will move over from Minister of Northern Development and Mines, and will bring with him Forestry. In 2009, Forestry was moved to the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines, a decision that received mixed reviews among the outdoors community.

PETERBOROUGH: The first step in effectively managing Ontario's invasive terrestrial species is finding where the species are located. The Invading Species Awareness Program (ISAP) is taking on that challenge by hosting road rallies to track, monitor and map terrestrial invasive species in the Peterborough area this week.

The Fifth Annual Ontario Invasive Plant Council (OIPC) Annual General Meeting and Invasive Plant Symposium will be held October 13 and 14 at the Isaiah Tubbs Resort in Prince Edward County. The first day will include workshops and tours, followed by feature speakers and the annual general meeting on day two. Representatives from approximately 100 organizations across Ontario are expected to attend. The public is also invited to participate in some or all of the symposium.
